I'll be reading with Deborah Clearman Sept. 6 in New York and Sept. 29 Vienna, Va., in a program called "INSIDER/OUTSIDER: Two Writers on Cultural Appropriation and the Writer's Eye."

Deborah Clearman is the author of "Concepción and the Baby Brokers and Other Stories Out of Guatemala."

She is the former program director of the NY Writers Coalition. She's led creative writing workshops throughout New York City, and currently leads a weekly workshop for women jailed on Rikers Island.

Her stories are set in Guatemala, where she's lived for extended periods. She writes about the human cost of international adoption, drug trafficking, and immigration in “stories about hard choices borne of desperation and the stark delineations between classes in both Guatemala and the United States . . . Clearman offers the same photographic eye and acute vision of Guatemalan culture throughout . . . stories of strength and ethical quandary.” (Kirkus)

We'll read from our work and participate in a conversation and Q&A about our writing.
